That the proper objects of sight neither exist without mind, nor are the images of external things, was shewn even in that treatise. There is therefore some other Spirit that causes them; since it is repugnant that they should subsist by themselves. The same may be said of all other miracles; which, in consequence of the foregoing principles, must be looked upon only as so many cheats, or illusions of fancy. After what has been said, it is, I suppose, plain that our souls are not to be known in the same manner as senseless, inactive objects, or by way of idea.
